Dans une lettre du 10 mai 1974 à Robert & Virginia Heinlein, Philip K. Dick évoque le lien (positif) qu'il peut y avoir entre le couple de ses destinataires et celui de Hawthorne & Caroline Abendsen. Dans une autre lettre du 10 août 1981 à Martha A. Bartter, Philip K. Dick précise que :
“The name ‘Abendsen’ was created on this basis, on the fact that the German word for Western World is ‘Abendland’, literally ‘Evening Land’, and their word for the East is ‘Morgenland’. Thus Hawthorne Abendsen is the son of the Western World, which is to say, the United States. Yin and yang are not in fact referred to in this name, at least not consciously on my part. He is the West standing up to the invasion from the East, which is to say, the Germans.”
